Continuing Education Requirement Deadline Extended
Click here to read more about the CEU requirement deadline extension.
ASID bylaws and policies require all practitioner members (professional, allied, associate members) to earn a minimum of 0.6 approved CEUs every two years. This is a required condition of membership. The current reporting period began Jan. 1, 2012 and the deadline was extended from Dec. 31, 2013 to Mar. 31, 2014. Paying your dues indicates that you agree to remain in compliance. If you need help finding CEUs in your area please contact your chapter and request information on upcoming events in your area. Visit the IDCEC website and click on Events Calendar.
This member requirement strengthens the interior design profession by improving individual attitudes, competencies, knowledge and skills in subject areas essential to the growth and success of the industry. There are hundreds of CEU courses offered online and in-person each calendar year and we invite you to select those that challenge you and expand your expertise as a designer.
6 Hours Every Two Years
Practitioner members (Professional, Allied, Associate members) of the Society are required to complete six contact hours of continuing education coursework every two years. To qualify, coursework must be taken from an approved provider such as:
- State Regulatory Board
- College, universities and other degree-granting institutions offering degrees (e.g., B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) and credit-bearing certificate and diploma programs in interior design that are accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER). Courses taken for college credit towards a degree program do not count as CEU credit.
The current reporting period for all practitioner members (Professional, Allied, Associate members) began Jan. 1 2012 and will end Dec. 31, 2013. (Only CEUs earned between Jan. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2013, will fulfill the requirement.) Please note ASID has extended this deadline to Mar. 31, 2014 to allow the opportunity for all members to complete these credits. The new reporting period will begin Jan. 1, 2014 end on Dec. 31, 2015. If you attend a CEU between Jan. 1 and Mar. 31, 2014, then you can apply those credits to the reporting period you still need to complete.
ASID wants to make reporting as easy as possible for members. When you pay your dues and sign the membership form you are agreeing to remain in compliance with the CEU requirement because it is a required condition of membership. You should be reporting your CEUs to your record on the free IDCEC system. Although this is not mandatory it is hightly recommended. ASID will receive a report at the end of the reporting period of all members and CEUs obtained. If the report indicates you have not reported your CEUs you must request a 30 day expension and show proof of compliance by the end of the 30 days. Please go to www.idcec.org, login and follow the directions for Registering Your CEUs. If you successfully submit all courses via IDCEC, you do not have to submit any information about the courses you have attended to ASID directly unless you are audited.
Receiving credit for non-IDCEC programs
Programs completed that are not IDCEC approved must be submitted to ASID for review prior to receiving credit. Once a program has been completed simply fill out the ASID Self Reporting Form and fax to Sarita Williams at (202) 546-3240 or email to Education@asid.org along with payment information. If the program qualifies you will be notified with a letter by email. This letter should be uploaded to your record on IDCEC by Mar. 31, 2014. All Self Reporting forms must be received no later than Mar. 20, 2014 keeping in mind it may take up to 10 days to be reviewed due the number of submissions we will receive at years end. The earlier CEUs are completed the less likely an audit will occur.
Warehousing with IDCEC
ASID members who elect to warehouse their CEUs with IDCEC will be able to take advantage of many benefits most free of charge. By recording your CEUs in your IDCEC record you may print an "unofficial" transcript free of charge at any time or request an "official" transcript for a nominal fee; ASID will be able to send you updates from time to time on your CEU status and you may go into your record at any time and view all reported CEUs you have taken for up to three years (the current reporting period plus the last year of the last reporting period). For courses that are IDCEC approved the instructor will report attendance on your behalf. Credit for a course taken and reported will show on your record within five (5) business days.
ASID members who elect NOT to warehouse their CEUs with IDCEC will be subject to an audit. At the end of a reporting period (next - December 31, 2013) ASID will receive a report listing CEUs completed by individual members. Members who have not met the 0.6 requirement will be audited. Members will be required to submit proof of the 0.6 CEUs by way of a certificate of attendance or completion or a stamped conference card. Members who cannot supply proof that 0.6 CEUs have been attained will face failure of compliance.
Failure to Comply
Any member who fails to comply with the continuing education requirement may be subject to a termination of Society membership in accordance with the requirements of the ASID By-Laws.
CEU Requirements – Effective January 1, 2014
The ASID Board of Directors approved an increase of required CEUs for all members in the Allied, Professional and Associate categories. Currently, ASID has the lowest CEU requirement (0.6) among the organizations representing the built environment. Raising CEU requirements brings ASID in line with its industry peers and expands member knowledge. .
Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from 0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours). Note that this does not affect the current reporting period, requiring 0.6 CEUs by Dec. 31, 2013. The first reporting period with the new 1.0 CEU requirement will begin January 1, 2014 and end on Dec. 31, 2015.
ASID is also expanding eligible CEUs making it easier to reach 1.0. Approved CEUs such as webinars and chapter events will continue, with the addition of activities such as authoring a book or article, keynote speaking engagements, receiving tenure and more. More information on extended CEUs will be available Fall 2013.
