IDCEC is an independent group with course review responsibilities. It is comprised of representatives from the following professional organizations:
- American Society of Interior Designers
- Interior Designers of Canada
- Interior Design Educators Council
- International Interior Design Association
The council meets semi-annually to discuss policies, processes, criteria and guidelines for continuing education courses.
The process for approval of a continuing education course begins with the submission of documents to the "sponsoring" organization. The sponsoring organization is one of the entities holding membership on the council. To be approved by IDCEC, the course must meet the following qualifications, as well as the IACET criteria and guidelines:
- Be focused on the practice of interior design
- Be generic, not targeted at selling a product or service
- Be created and delivered by qualified instructors
- Be delivered using a variety of presentation methods
Once the course is submitted to one of the organizations, it is then distributed to a network of reviewers for evaluation. The reviewers determine the viability and the number of credit/contact hours of the course based on:
- Competency of instructors and qualification relative to teaching the material
- Clearly defined course objectives
- Presentation methodology relative to course objectives and group size
- Compatibility between group size, topic and methods outlined in the course proposal
- Completeness of outline and handouts
