Barbara J. Huelat, AAHID, ASID, IIDA is nationally recognized for work in evidence based healthcare design and serves as a healing environment interior design consultant to healthcare facilities, product manufacturers, academia, institutions and the architectural design community. Her three decades as a design practitioner cover virtually all types, components and sizes of domestic and international healthcare facilities.
Barbara was a founding board member for the Center for Healthcare Design and former corporate vice president and chief of healthcare interior architecture at Ellerbe Becket in addition to a variety of other professional and academic positions. She is currently president of the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers, a credentialing organization to qualify healthcare interior designers. Ms. Huelat received a bachelors of arts in Interior Design, Chicago, Il with continuing studies in the divisional master program of Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago. She has been active in national healthcare design committees such as ANSI Taskforce for Barrier Free Design, Environmental Standards Committee, The American Society of Interior Designers, International Interior Design Association and American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers. Barbara has been honored with numerous design awards for projects of excellence, as well as personal recognition for American Society of Interior Designers, Washington Metro Chapter Designer of Distinction, and the Humanities Design Award.
Ms Huelat has authored two books: Healing Environments, Design for the Body Mind & Spirit, Healing Environments, What’s the Proof? and some 60 + healthcare journal articles on a variety of healing design topics including wayfinding, cancer center design, pediatrics, myths and reality, quality and costs and nature and healing. Barbara is a popular speaker; she lectures frequently on a spectrum of healthcare design topics.
