Challenges.....Fabulous views along one wall of windows and a dumb fireplace in a bad location that can’t be moved?
Objective.....Create a space that is very relaxed and not delicate (the pool is accessed through this room). My Clients asked for a sofa big enough to stretch out on.
Design.....A custom designed 12 foot leather sofa anchors the room. Dark distressed woods and a patterned carpet stand up to bad behavior. The awkward fireplace was incorporated as an element into the media wall. Mouldings and a stenciled design (picked up from the carpet) add interest at the ceiling.
Achievement.....Comfortable and durable, this turned out to be an easy room to live in and use both for the family and for casual entertaining. Yes…you could dance on the coffee table if you wanted to!

Challenges.....Keep the piano (the children practice) and figure out a way to entice use of this room. The untouched fireplace was a hole in the wall surrounded by a bit of stone work?
Objective.....Give this space a purpose and make it a destination.
Design.....Custom designed upholstery, four easy chairs and an oversized ottoman center the space. A new custom mantle upgrades the fireplace and creates a focal point. Draperies cluster in the four corners of the room to “soften” visually and acoustically.
Achievement.....A cozy put-up-your-feet kind of room with a limited color palate of deep soothing colors. The most comfortable chairs in the house to curl up in with a cup of tea by the fire... you’ll just want to stay there.
/ Lounge & Music Room
Challenges.....A most awkwardly proportioned dining room; too tall, too narrow with a great bank of large windows with an unfortunate view of A/C equipment and the side of a hill?
Objective.....Create a focal point, downplay the view and make the most of the amazing light streaming in through the clerestory windows.
Design.....A large cornice box, draperies and semi-opaque shades transformed the windows. Indirect lighting was hidden into the top of the cornice to bathe the ceiling with soft light after dark. A custom buffet was designed for the barrel vaulted niche with painted detailing picked up from the rug. A dining table and upholstered chairs can expand to seat ten.
Achievement.....An example of “less is more”. The room seems fully furnished with only a handful of well chosen elements. The final effect is light and airy.

Challenges.....I was called in “after” new granite counters were installed over the less than exciting existing cabinets. Rework what was already in place?
Objective.....Although well made, the existing maple cabinets were uninspiring. The appliances were outdated. The kitchen lacked style.
Design.....A new island was designed to fit the existing granite slab. Wooden door insets were replaced with frosted glass. Mouldings were added and all the cabinetry was painted and given an antique finish. All new appliances were installed and new gunmetal hardware was added.
Achievement.....A bit of decorator “magic” transforming the plain-jane into something stylish, the ultimate in recycling.

These are original color elevations I created for Client presentations. As part of the design process a variety of visual elements are created…sketches, floor plans, photos and samples.
For complete room designs a set of color drawings such as these may be created as the final approval stage of the design process.

An addition to a 1926 Mediterranean Revival home. The loggia looks as though it was always part of the original structure, but the current homeowner added it in a renovation for the showhouse. / ASID Showhouse 2006
