About the Owner: Tobi Indyke is owner and head artist at Periwinkle Skies, LLC which was established in 2006. Tobi has worked as an independent decorative finisher and muralist since 1992 and in her previous life, worked as an art director and graphic designer. Tobi’s vast experience and honed expertise allows her to offer unique and completely customized solutions for each project formulated with sensitivity to the needs of the client and the planet. A return to ancient techniques using natural materials is particularly important to Tobi. Her desire to use authentic mediums was prompted by industry-wide concerns regarding a variety of health problems caused by exposure to commercially made petro-chemical paints and solvents. This has been her inspiration for working with sustainable plasters, waxes, paints and colorants. Petro-chemical paints and solvents have been the standard materials used for the faux finishing industry since the 1950’s. As a faux finisher since the early 1990’s, Tobi worked with these toxic products until symptoms developed that she could no longer ignore. As it turned out, she had developed a benign meningioma that was tangled in the network of her audial and visual nerves--the meningioma was treated in 2005. Tobi began the switch to natural materials from that time forward. Materials: The journey that has led Tobi to clay, soy, casein, beeswax and lime based products has been extremely rewarding. Although these mediums are not intermixable, they can be layered--revealing paths to a new realm of creativity. Dry time is quicker, clean-up is easier, and no more headaches (literally)! The resulting product is healthier for the client, the artist and the environment.
