2005 Student Design Competition Winner
Jill Garzik, Student Member ASID, received the 2005 ASID Student Design Award at Celebration: The ASID Design Awards at INTERIORS 06 in Nashville in March.
According to Garzik, believing in herself was the key to receiving this honor. As did many colleges this year, the New England School of Art and Design, where Garzik is a senior, incorporated the competition—to design a spa for multiple sclerosis patients that employs universal design, as well as sustainable products—into its curriculum, requiring students to complete the project per the ASID guidelines. The school would then enter two projects from each class in the competition. When the school didn’t choose her project to be submitted, Garzik decided to enter the competition on her own.
According to this year’s competition judges, Sharron Patch, ASID; Sandy Gordon, ASID; Carolyn Ames, Allied Member ASID, Garzik’s design solution, rendered elevations and choice of materials were serene, warm and soothing.
Garzik, who spent three weeks researching multiple sclerosis and learning about accessibility issues and various treatments, said the project was one of the most advanced her class has had to work on. “One of the most demanding parts of the project was meeting the ADA requirements,” she said. “Because of the nature of the facility, the space had to be completely accessible; minimum specifications weren’t sufficient.”
Garzik encourages students entering next year’s competition to be open to new ideas and disciplines and to ask a lot of questions.
Garzik, who previously studied graphic design and at once time served as editor-in-chief of Venture, the school’s literary magazine, sees interior design as “the perfect blend of art and academics, forcing you to use both logical and abstract thinking. ” She urges other interior design students to get involved with projects outside of their program.
“Take a chance,” says Garzik. “You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish if you set a large goal for yourself.”
