Better Lighting and Daylighting Solutions: Improving Visual Quality in Office Environments

by American Society of Interior Designers

March 2006

A Professional Paper from the American Society of Interior Designers, Orfield Laboratories, Inc., Haworth, Inc., Lutron Electronics, and Vista Window Film.
Authors Steven Orfield, Jay L. Brand, Ph.D. and Pekka Hakkarainen, Ph.D. contend that for some time lighting quality has taken a back seat to energy consumption as the primary lighting issue in office environments.  Beginning with how occupants perceive light and moving on to ways in which light interacts with the objects and surfaces in the office environment, they examine the basic components of good lighting and daylighting as they relate to improving visual quality for occupants and, ultimately, work performance.  Particular sections address strategies for daylighting control and common issues related to task and ambient lighting.
