Basement design can be constraining due to lower ceiling heights and support poles seemingly placed at random. (My Engineer son would probably take offense to that statement!) For this basement project, we chose to embrace these limitations and design a space that needed low ceilings and cozy spaces. The design concept for this project was “Cellar Style.” Because one would expect that a true wine cellar would be underground or in a cave, natural stone veneer was applied one wall to make this concrete dungeon into a continental cellar. Arched doorways added to the feel of a European space with the arch motif carried through to the cellar entrance, display niches and the passageways between the home theatre and arcade area. Creative space planning enclosed two metal support poles into the walls of the cellar while the remaining support pole was encased to make a stone pillar adding character and supporting the cellar theme.
