GREENGUARD Certification Programs
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is an industry-independent, not-for-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification programs. As an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable product standards for building materials, interior furnishings, cleaners, electronics and children’s products. The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute also establishes building standards designed to protect the health of occupants through the control of mold, moisture and indoor pollutants.
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is recognized as an important concern in the creation of healthy, high-performance buildings and is highlighted as a key component of numerous sustainable building programs and procurement guidelines around the world. Chemicals and particle emissions, including allergens and molds, are the primary sources of indoor air pollution and can have significant health impacts on building occupants and economic consequences for building owners, architects and designers. GREENGUARD Certification programs provide scientific rigor based on best practice guidelines, stringent evaluation criteria and robust verification procedures to effectively control the sources of these environmental pollutants.
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute and its scientific partners work hand-in-hand with manufacturers to develop effective, efficient and economical plans for certifying a broad range of products. All certified products carry the GREENGUARD Certification mark. Use of the certification mark is contingent on a manufacturer’s continued compliance with ongoing certification testing and reporting requirements.

GREENGUARD PremierSM Certified
A comprehensive health-based product certification program for which products of all types are eligible. This program, which is currently in its pilot phase, incorporates emissions criteria for both acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) health impacts. In addition to these strict emissions requirements, chemical content requirements are imposed for specific heavy metals and toxins, including lead and phthalates. The GREENGUARD Premier Certification program utilizes specific environment exposure assessments to address how products are used in homes, schools, hospitals and office buildings, depending on product type.
