Webinar: Avoiding Toxic Chemicals in Commercial Building Products

Date: June 3, 2013

Time: 3 – 4:15 p.m. (EST)

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1.  Identify at least ten toxic substances commonly found in building materials and interior furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) and specify healthier alternatives.

2. Specify the difference between first-party, self-reported information and independent, third-party certifications.

3. Recognize chemicals of concern published in “red lists” and apply the Precautionary Principle when assessing risks associated with them.

4. Apply a rigorous protocol from independent, trusted sources when vetting a product’s ingredients and environmental impact.

Course Description

Avoiding Toxic Chemicals in Commercial Building Products outlines the process for recognizing, assessing, and avoiding building materials and furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) that contain chemicals of concern. The course will demonstrate how to identify the most common hazards, understand their risks, and develop a customizable set of priorities for specifying materials that contain toxic substances. The presenters will illustrate valuable lessons learned from several case studies of projects that have used these resources to create healthier, more environmentally-preferable interiors.
