What Design Can Do 2017

Description

What Design Can Do (WDCD) was initiated in 2011 as a platform to showcase design as a catalyst of change and as a way of addressing the societal questions of our time. The story is told through our annual conference in Amsterdam, additional conferences in other parts of the world, the worldwide What Design Can Do Challenge, as well as our own publications and the WDCD blog.

In 2017 and 2018 WDCD focusses its attention to climate change, definitely the most urgent issue humanity faces right now. WDCD Live Amsterdam 2017  (23 & 24 May) will be entirely dedicated to climate change. In many areas of the world houses are threatened by natural disasters. Climate change is aggravating both the frequency as well as the extremity of phenomena such as hurricanes, flooding and tsunamis as well as long term climate conditions including sea level rise, shifting spectra towards ultra violet, regional drought and such. The home, its construction and design of its exterior as well as its interior will have to respond: Resilient Architecture, architecture with a build in capacity to maintain functionality of vital parts during extreme circumstances.

On May 24 at 2:00 p.m. Central European Summer Time, ASID CEO Randy Fiser will participate in a discussion panel, Reflection on Resilience Architecture. The American Society of Interior Designers wants to open up the dialogue and collect different perspectives on Resilient Architecture: architecture that will maintain vital functionality during extremes and will recover after the situation returns to normal. In this inspirational and reflective session, you will listen to different experts (interior designers, a former mayor, architects and urbanists) who all share their own view on the topic. Starting at the interior we will gradually zoom out to the exterior and end at the bigger perspective of the urban environment. What is Resilient Architecture? What will it look like? Where do we need it? What about the user/resident/citizen? What responsibility does the maker have?
