About the American Society of Interior Designers

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) believes that design impacts lives.

We collaborate with others to promote the value of interior design. We prepare our members to excel in a dynamic and evolving profession. We generate, collect, and disseminate applied knowledge.

Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, we strive to advance the interior design profession and, in the process, to demonstrate and celebrate the power of design to positively change people’s lives.

We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from evidence-based and human-centric design to social responsibility, well-being, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide.

The Association

Founded in 1975, ASID is the oldest, largest and only multi-disciplinary professional organization for interior designers, interior design students and the manufacturers and suppliers who support the profession.

The rich, vibrant history of the organization goes back to the founding of its predecessor organizations, the American Institute of Interior Designers (AID) and the National Society of Interior Designers (NSID).

The Team

Board of Directors

ASID is governed by an 11 member Board of Directors. These volunteer leaders are responsible for strategic direction and financial oversight of the Corporation including policy development, nominations and elections and recruitment/contract management of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). It is an enormous responsibility that requires experience in volunteer leadership, a passion for the profession, and the time and dedication to serve in this capacity.

The annual call for Nominations is open to members of the design community who may or may not be ASID members. The call for submission is issued every Fall. Board terms are two years and run from October 1-September 30 annually, which is ASID’s fiscal year.

The Strategy

ASID is grounded in our annual Strategic Plan. Our 2017-2020 plan has five strategic pillars that focus on the Impact of Design, Diversity & Inclusion and Living the Brand.

We value our governing documents - Bylaws and Policies- created to provide a governance framework that empowers our board, committee, chapter and staff teams in their day-to-day work.

Most importantly, we are inspired by our Vision Statement.

ASID advances the profession and communicates the impact of interior design to enhance the human experience.

Our volunteer leaders believe it.  Our staff team delivers on it.  Members of the interior design community provide us with the content to communicate the message to the broader public.

Each year we reach higher and work harder to grow the organization. It currently does and must continue to reflect the community that we represent at both the national and local level.  We hope we have inspired you; join our community.

What We Do

Membership – ASID has a number of categories for designers at every stage of their career, including students of interior design. We also have membership and sponsorship opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers who provide products and services to the industry. Join ASID’s vibrant community of 25,000+!  We look forward to counting you among us.

Professional Development – We offer career stage programming that focuses on the Impact of Design, the Business of Design, Leadership Development and Health & Wellness.  We offer both online and in-person engagement opportunities.  We also offer study prep courses for the WELL exam and seminars for principals/owners interested in learning about business transition.

Research & Knowledge Management – Our research team provides economic, sector, career stage and, of course, design data and research to the marketplace.  Through the ASID Foundation, we provide over $100,000 in funding annually to various research and scholarship initiatives to help build the knowledge community for the interior design profession.

One Voice – Our government and public relations team works at the state and federal levels to represent your interests as an interior design professional AND as a business owner. Our first priority is right to practice –whether that be through interior design legislation or seal/stamp privileges at the municipal level.  In addition, we lobby on issues that affect the business of interior design.  Items such as copyright, lien rights and company ownership.  Want to get involved in our advocacy efforts, text “one voice” to 52886.

Communications – Our challenge is getting your attention because we understand the content you receive each day and we appreciate the day filled the meetings and deadlines. We face the same situation ourselves.  BUT, we have so much to offer you; evident from the list above.

So, give us a try.  Whether it is ICON (award winning ASID magazine), ASID Insider or Eye on Design newsletters, Chair’s Message, an event notice or through your social media channels.

We are confident, you will find something that makes sense to you among the noise because at ASID – we stand out in a crowd!
