A Sustainable Ramada and Backyard
Rather than doing a major remodel on an existing home, extending the home outdoors will expand the living space. Replacing a window with French doors transforms this new patio into a second dining room and a great space for entertaining. With a new fan above the patio and a fire bowl in the yard, this outdoor space is usable almost year round. Its many sustainable features include low-VOC paint and wood stain, an Energy Star galvanized steel roof, low-e window and doors, and LED lighting. Reusing, recycling and upcycling materials are great ways to create a green home. Existing, on-site bricks were reused for the pathways in this backyard remodel while used bricks were purchased for the fire bowl pad. The fire bowl is upcycled from half a propane tank, and it is filled with recycled glass. The ramada and fire bowl area are part of a landscape design that includes passive water harvesting, native vegetation for low-water use and LED landscape lighting.
