The Hospitality Design sector brief builds on the ASID 2016-2017 Outlook and State of the Industry report by exploring the factors affecting design in the hospitality industry. How do the factors affecting all design disciplines play out in hospitality design? To search for an answer, we rely on the information gathered for the Outlook report, as well as a scan of hospitality design literature, and discussions with the hospitality design Think Tank (see list in Acknowledgments).
While the influences are many, the key factors affecting hospitality design explored in this report are the economy, environmental protection, generational differences, well-being, community, design excellence, and data and knowledge.
For each factor, we try to answer three questions:
We also examine the many ways technology is driving hospitality design today. Finally, in the Change Maker Challenge section of the report, we suggest that interior designers can advance the profession by engaging in more applied research relevant to hospitality design and by exercising their leadership as design professionals in hospitality projects.
