Known as “DJ” to friends and colleagues, David “DJ” Johnson has worked in association management for over 15 years. DJ joined ASID in 2014 as Director of Chapter Program Development. He was promoted to VP, Membership in 2016. He oversees the strategy and implementation of the Society’s membership recruitment and retention plan as well as managing and improving ASID’s chapter board leadership development initiatives. He manages the member and chapter services team at ASID HQ.

A graduate of Indiana University – Bloomington with a BA in Journalism, DJ worked as a magazine writer in Chicago before transitioning to association management. He has worked at associations focused on healthcare, journalism and non-profit management. DJ’s first nonprofit position was with the American Association of Diabetes Educators headquartered in Chicago. He has also served as the head of membership and chapters/components at the Drug Information Association and the National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association. DJ was instrumental in realigning the component strategic planning process while working at ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership.

In 2016, DJ was selected to be a member of the 2016-18 class of the ASAE Diversity Executive Leadership Program scholars, a program intended to help association executives that are underrepresented in the C-suite reach the senior staff or CEO level. In 2013 he gained the dual honors of being named one of Association Forum's "40 Under Forty" exemplary association executives and one of Association Trends Magazine Young & Aspiring Association Professionals. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Institute for Organization Management and on ASAE’s Centennial Celebration Task Force.

DJ enjoys building relationships and working with people, making membership and chapter relations a natural fit. He is always interested in hearing from members about their membership experiences, both at ASID and other organizations.

  1. Indiana University is a part of his DNA; DJ was born in Bloomington 4 months before his father graduated with an MBA from IU.
  2. DJ’s father is also named David Johnson, which led to many cases of incorrect phone call and mail routing during DJ’s childhood and inspired DJ to take on his nickname.
  3. He has lived in 7 states, including Indiana, Texas, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland and Illinois.
  4. Wrote a play titled “World of Our Own” while in high school, that was subsequently turned into a musical at Northwestern University. DJ has also acted in plays and musicals on professional stages in Indiana and Chicago.
  5. DJ is a proud comic book/sci-fi afficiando and cosplayer. He is very proud his three-year-old son can name all of Marvel Comics’ Avengers and DC Comics Justice League on sight.
