As part of our Designing With series, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) highlights designers who lead with listening, collaboration, and cultural understanding. Each story explores how heritage, identity, and lived experience shape the way we design and the way communities experience space.
When we design with people at the center, spaces become more than beautiful environments. They become reflections of history, belonging, and possibility. Through this series, we celebrate the designers who honor that responsibility and help carry our profession forward with intention.
In this conversation, Wanda Brown, ASID, NCIDQ shares how togetherness, storytelling, and legacy influence her approach and the spaces she creates.
On Heritage & Community
What does “designing with” rather than “designing for” mean to you?
As a person who appreciates the importance of being heard, my design process begins with listening—truly hearing my client’s wants, needs and desires. I collaborate with clients, not just for them; it’s the only way to create a space that speaks to their unique lives.
On Process
What role does storytelling play in co-creating spaces with the communities you serve?
I believe every space should tell a story about the people who inhabit them. My goal is to help you write it—from preserving your family’s legacy and showcasing your personal passions, to creating the perfect space that quietly whispers ‘You belong here.’
On Inspiration & Impact
What impact do you hope your work leaves on the communities you partner with?
In my world, design has no color barrier; it’s about creating exceptional spaces for the diverse communities I have the privilege to serve. As a Black woman in this industry, I hope my work inspires Black and Brown youth to see themselves here, to seek formal training, and to know with certainty: You can do it too.
On Legacy & Future
What advice would you give to other designers seeking to build authentic relationships with the communities they design with?
People are people, we are more alike than you may think. My approach is simple: listen to understand. Dive deep into the culture, lifestyle and nuances of the clients you serve, because I believe that truly great interiors are the result of meaningful collaborations.
